A building as large as the RRBITC requires a lot of cooling to keep tenants and visitors comfortable – enough to cool 2,000 average size homes in the DC area.
Johnson Controls replaced three of the building’s original chillers with new YORK® YZ Magnetic Bearing Centrifugal Chillers. These variable speed chillers are a GSA Green Proving Ground innovative building technology, and are not only very energy efficient, but are low maintenance and use an environmentally friendly advanced refrigerant.
Johnson Controls also implemented its OpenBlue Central Utility Plant (CUP) solution, which uses predictive algorithms and real-time data to make adjustments that reduce energy use and operation cost without sacrificing reliability. It continuously monitors thousands of variables to automatically generate and implement optimization decisions, such as equipment staging and chilled water temperature, to reliably provide the proper amount of cooling at the most efficient cost while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
These improvements alone produce six-figure energy savings each year.
